The engines Beijing Automotive built for the Chinese Pajero and the Beijing Jeep Cherokee — BJ492, the 4RB petrol fours and the DK4A diesel.

⚑ These cars look like Mitsubishis and Jeeps and are not. Beijing Automotive built both under long-running joint ventures with its own engines beside the licensed ones, and a Chinese-market Pajero of this period frequently carries an engine the Japanese car never had. Ordering parts from a Mitsubishi or Jeep catalogue is the standing mistake.

The BJ492 traces back to a 1960s design and stayed in production for decades — it is simple, mechanical, and still supported in its home market long after the vehicles left every other one.

Establish which engine is actually fitted before anything else. The badge, the model name and the chassis plate will not tell you; the engine's own casting number will.

Documentation outside China is essentially nonexistent, and that is the practical constraint rather than anything about the engineering.

2 generations, across 2 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
