Mitsubishi Pajero

The large ladder-frame four-wheel drive, under three different names depending on market — a fact worth knowing before searching, because the community knowledge is split across all three. Fleet and expedition duty means the population is high-mileage and often heavily loaded, so its diesel's turbo and EGR codes arrive earlier in life than the same engine's would in a car.

Largely mechanical injection, so a scan tool reads very little on these — most diagnosis is compression, fuel delivery and the transfer case. **Four-wheel drive is a conventional part-time system and the car has to be stationary to take it up.**

Second generation (V20/V30/V40) 1991–1999

Super Select four-wheel drive belongs to this generation alone, and it is the reason a fault here is as often the transfer case as the engine. **Mitsubishi built it to 1999**, but CKD assembly carried on far longer — the Philippines to 2008, Colombia and India to 2012 — and those cars are this one. **The Chinese car is not.** Changfeng took the licence in 1999 and sold it as the Liebao Heijingang, Qibing and Q6 until 2021, with engines the Japanese car never had; earlier Beijing and Guangdong joint ventures did badge theirs Mitsubishi, and those carry BAW's own fours.
