In the DM plug-in cars it spends most of its life as a generator, which is the framing that matters: a complaint about power, response or gear selection on one of those is a question about the hybrid control strategy, not about this engine. byd-dm-i covers that side.
Where it does drive the wheels it is conventional: direct injection, a chain, and a turbocharger whose life tracks oil condition. Intake-valve carbon at mileage is expected rather than a fault.
On a plug-in the engine runs far less than the odometer suggests, which cuts both ways — less wear, and more of the trouble that comes from an engine rarely reaching temperature. BYD's own service literature is the only reliable reference.
