Honda's B-series four — the 1.6 B16 and 1.8 B18 — in the Civic and the Integra.

⚑ It is the engine VTEC was built around, and that is why it is written about more than any other four-cylinder here. A second, more aggressive cam profile engages above roughly 5,500 rpm, and the step is audible and physical — an owner describing "the cam kicking in" is describing normal operation, not a fault.

Which matters diagnostically, because the commonest real complaint is that it STOPS happening. VTEC engagement is oil-pressure driven through a solenoid on the head, and low oil level, a clogged solenoid screen or a failed pressure switch all present the same way: the engine pulls normally to 5,500 and then simply does not change. Check the oil and the screen before the solenoid, and the solenoid before anything internal.

The timing belt is what ends these engines. It is an interference design, it is thirty-odd years old, and on a car this heavily modified the history is very often unknown or wrong.

⚑ These engines are modified more than any others in this catalogue, and that changes the diagnosis before it starts. A B18C in a Civic that left the factory with a D16 is common; so is a rebuilt engine with a stamped code that no longer describes what is inside it. Confirm what is actually fitted before trusting any specification, including the compression ratio and the fuel requirement.

Distributor and ignition components are the ordinary wear items, and a hot-restart failure on one of these is very often the ignitor inside the distributor rather than anything more serious.
