Jaguar Land Rover's V8 diesel — the 3.6 TDV8 and 4.4 SDV8 — in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.

It is a compact, very high torque engine in a very heavy vehicle, and that pairing shapes everything: it is worked hard even when the car is being driven gently.

⚑ Its known failures are all in the same place — the top of the engine, under the intake. The turbochargers are in the V, the EGR coolers are in the V, and access to any of it means removing the intake system. A job that sounds small is not, and that should be said before a quote is given.

Crankshaft and bearing failures are a documented pattern on the SDV8 at high mileage, and oil analysis is the cheap way to ask the question before a rebuild is priced.

The emissions equipment is where most complaints originate — DPF, EGR and, later, SCR — and the duty cycle that breaks it is a heavy vehicle on short journeys, which is how many of these are used.
