Also known as: lf479q2, lf481q3, lfb479q, lf479, lf481, lifan 1.6

Lifan's petrol fours — the 1.5 LF479, 1.6 LF481 and 1.8 LFB479 — in the 620, X60 and the models around them.

They are derived from Toyota's 8A and Mitsubishi's 4G designs rather than drawn from scratch, which is the useful route in: when Lifan material runs out — and it runs out quickly — the parent engine's material often still describes the mechanicals.

Derived is not identical, and the difference is in the ancillaries, the management and the emissions equipment rather than in the block.

Their complaints are the ordinary small-engine set: a carboned throttle body, ignition coils failing one at a time, and a coolant temperature sensor that skews fuelling without setting anything anybody notices.

Documentation in English is essentially nonexistent and parts supply outside China and the export markets is the practical limit on keeping one running.

Cars fitted with this engine

2 generations, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
