Mahindra's 1.5 three-cylinder diesel — 1,493 cc, common rail, turbocharged — in the Quanto, the TUV300 and Bolero Neo, and the current Bolero.
⚑ It is not the 1.5 four-cylinder beside it, and the displacements are four cubic centimetres apart. Mahindra sells a second 1.5 diesel — the 4D15, 1,497 cc and four cylinders, in the Marazzo, the XUV300 and the second-generation Thar. A capacity read off a registration document cannot tell them apart. Count the injectors, or read the badge: everything named mCR or carrying a two-digit power suffix (mCR100, mHawk100, mHawk75, mHawkD70) is this engine. See 1.5 mHawk (D15).
⚑ And the mHawk badge on it belongs to a different engine again. The 2.2 mHawk is a re-engineered PSA DW12, and none of its European service history applies here. Three Mahindra diesels wear names that look related and are not. Establish the displacement and the cylinder count before reading anything across.
Three cylinders is the fact that changes the diagnosis. One cylinder down is a third of the engine, so a single dead injector arrives as a shake through the whole car and is regularly reported as a mounting, a driveshaft or a gearbox fault. The balancer shaft that makes the layout tolerable is itself a source of noise complaints that are not faults.
One engine, several power ratings, and the rating is on the badge rather than in the block. It has been sold at 70, 75, 98.6 and 100 PS in vehicles that are otherwise the same; the differences are calibration and turbocharger, not architecture. So a fault tree is shared across all of them — which is the useful half of a badge that changes with the trim.
Short urban journeys are what break it. The particulate filter on the emissions-controlled versions never reaches temperature, regeneration attempts fail, and the fuel used trying passes into the sump. A rising oil level is a symptom, not a servicing error.
English-language documentation is thin outside India, so search the engine badge rather than the model name — the same body carries this and the 2.2.
