Mercedes-Benz M133
2.0 L · inline-4 · turbocharged · petrol · 2013–2019
Also known as: m133, a45 engine, cla45 engine, gla45 engine
AMG's first hand-built 2.0 four, in the original A45, CLA45 and GLA45, and the engine the M139 replaced. When it launched it was the most powerful production four-cylinder in the world.
Its specific output is the operating envelope, not a statistic. At well over 150 hp per litre, boost pressure, charge temperature and oil condition decide whether it behaves — a tired or incorrect oil, a marginal intercooler or an intake leak produces knock and heat-related faults far sooner than on an ordinary 2.0 turbo.
And it is not the M139 under an older number. The successor turned the engine around to put the turbocharger at the rear; this one does not, and the layout, the plumbing and the access are different. A repair procedure written for one does not describe the other.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
