Also known as: 2.0 turbo, c200 engine, c250 engine, m274 de 20 al, 1.6 turbo

The longitudinally mounted four-cylinder petrol of the C-Class and E-Class, in 1.6 and 2.0 litre forms — direct injection, turbocharged, and the volume petrol engine of those cars for a decade. Its transverse sibling is the M270, mechanically closely related but fitted to the front-drive A-Class and B-Class; the two are frequently confused and a part number for one is often wrong for the other.

It also appears outside Mercedes-Benz: Infiniti fitted it to the Q50, which is the kind of cross-badge fact a per-vehicle reference cannot state.

The recurring complaints are camshaft adjuster (variable valve timing) wear producing a rattle on start-up and timing codes, the usual direct-injection intake-valve carbon, and — on higher-mileage examples — the balance shaft and chain. A cold-start rattle that lasts a second or two before oil pressure builds is the pattern to recognise.

Cars fitted with this engine

12 generations, across 2 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
