Also known as: rd28, rd28t, rd28eti, rd28ti, rd tdi, patrol 2.8 diesel

Nissan's 2.8 diesel straight-six — the RD28 — in the Patrol and Laurel.

A six-cylinder diesel in a four-cylinder's displacement class is the unusual part, and the consequence is the one people buy it for: smoothness and a long, unstressed life at outputs that were modest when new.

The RD28ETi adds a turbocharger and electronic control to what is otherwise an indirect-injection engine with a mechanical pump — which is where its faults concentrate. The pump-mounted electronics fail with heat and give an intermittent cut that clears when cool.

Cylinder head cracking is the structural item on the turbocharged engines, usually after an overheat or a raised boost setting, and coolant loss with no external leak is the tell.

In the Patrol it sits alongside the TB petrol sixes and the ZD30, both of which have pages here — and the badge on the car says nothing about which is fitted.

1 generation, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
