Opel's 2.0-litre common-rail diesel — the engine of the Insignia, Astra J and Zafira C, and part of the wider GM diesel family that also served Fiat and Saab.
The complaint that dominates is the diesel particulate filter and the duty cycle behind it: these engines went into large cars often used for short journeys, and a filter that never completes regeneration produces soot loading, repeated post-injection and oil dilution — a rising oil level that is a fault report rather than an overfill. Left alone it damages bearings.
The swirl-flap actuator in the intake manifold and the EGR cooler are the other two recurring items, both producing airflow and performance complaints without an obvious single component at fault. Injector wear at high mileage completes the list, and as elsewhere fuel quality is often the underlying cause rather than age.
