Perkins is an independent diesel maker, not a marque — and its engines are in Fords, Massey Fergusons, Land Rovers, Dodges and a very long list of working vehicles.
⚑ That is the whole reason to know the name. A Perkins in a Brazilian Ford truck looks like a Ford engine and is not; Perkins' own material carries the service data, the rebuild specifications and a parts supply that still exists, because the company is still trading and still supports engines fifty years old.
They are slow-turning indirect-injection engines built for agricultural and commercial duty — long stroke, heavy castings, and output figures that read poorly against anything designed for a car.
Everything is mechanical. An inline injection pump, no rail, nothing to read electronically: compression, pump timing, glow plugs and injector nozzles are the entire diagnostic vocabulary, exactly as they are for MWM and the older VM Motori engines this catalogue also carries.
Caterpillar has owned Perkins since 1998, which is where later documentation files.
