Also known as: xd88, xd 88, peugeot xd88

Peugeot's XD88, assembled under licence by Tata from 1988 and the original engine of the Tatamobile 206, the Telcoline and the Sumo.

⚑ The 483 DL is not this engine, and that is the single most useful thing on this page. Both are 1,948 cc Tata-built indirect-injection fours sold in the same vehicles, both make 63 hp, and they read as one engine for exactly that reason — but the 483 is a Tata-built stroked version of the unrelated Peugeot XUD9, a different block that happens to land on the same displacement. Two parts catalogues, one badge size.

Because it is a Peugeot XD, French service material describes it and there is far more of it than anything filed under Tata.

It is entirely mechanical — indirect injection with a pre-chamber, two valves per cylinder, an inline pump, no rail and nothing to interrogate electronically. Compression, pump timing, glow plugs and injector nozzles are the whole vocabulary.

aspiration is left open because the sources disagree about which block the 92 hp turbocharged export engine of 1998 belongs to: the Sumo article turbocharges this one and the Telcoline article the 483 DL, at the same output. The Sumo's 2.0 turbo row is deliberately uncoded for the same reason.

1 generation, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
