Chrysler World Engine (GEMA)

The 1.8, 2.0 and 2.4 litre four designed by the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance — Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Hyundai together — which is why it is architecturally close to Mitsubishi's 4B1 and to Hyundai's Theta. Fitted to the Compass, Patriot, Caliber, Journey, 200 and, in later Tigershark form, the Cherokee and Renegade.

The Tigershark 2.4 with MultiAir is the version with a serious reputation, for oil consumption traced to the piston rings, and it was the subject of extended warranty coverage and litigation in the United States. The presentation is consumption without external leaks, followed by the usual downstream consequences on a chain-driven engine. On any Tigershark, consumption is a primary question.

The earlier non-MultiAir World Engines are more ordinary, though they share the family's tendency toward timing-chain and tensioner noise at higher mileage. Because three manufacturers built variants, parts and procedures do not transfer as freely between them as the shared origin suggests — confirm the specific engine code before ordering.
