Great Wall Motors GW4D20 (GW4D family, 2.0 and 2.4)

Great Wall's 2.0-litre common-rail diesel — the engine of the Wingle pickup, the Poer and the earlier diesel Haval models, and one of the more numerous Chinese diesels in export markets across Africa, South America and Central Asia.

It was developed with Bosch supplying the injection system, which is the practically useful fact: the high-pressure pump, injectors and their fault codes are conventional Bosch common-rail hardware, so generic diagnosis of the fuel system applies directly even where vehicle-specific documentation does not exist.

The vehicles it sits in do genuine work, and the failures follow duty rather than age — injector wear where fuel quality is poor, the variable-geometry turbocharger sticking with carbon, and EGR blockage on low-speed work. Where an owner's manual and a dealer network are hard to reach, the generic corpus and community write-ups carry more of the diagnostic load than they do on a European equivalent, which is the reason this engine has a page at all.
