Chevrolet LK0 / LL0 (Saturn 1.9)

Saturn's 1.9 four — the single-cam LK0 and twin-cam LL0 — in the S-series.

⚑ It shares nothing with any other GM engine of its era, which is the point of the page: Saturn was set up as a separate company with its own plant and its own engineering, and the LK0 is not a Family II, not an Ecotec and not a Quad 4. GM material for those does not describe it.

It is an all-aluminium block with cast-iron liners and a chain, so there is no belt to schedule — a real advantage on a car of this age and value.

Its known item is oil consumption, from the piston rings, and it is common enough on high-mileage engines to be expected rather than alarming. The level matters more than the cause on a car worth what these are.

Head gasket failure after an overheat is the other pattern, and an aluminium block with liners is unforgiving of one.

Saturn closed in 2010 and the parts network with it, which is usually what decides whether a repair happens.
