Toyota H-series (H41F / H55F)

Toyota's H-series manual gearboxes — the four-speed H41F and H42F and the five-speed H55F — in Land Cruisers.

⚑ The H55F is the swap everybody wants and the reason most material about this family exists: it is the five-speed that fits where a four-speed was, and fitting one to a J40 or J60 is a well-trodden conversion. So a surviving H55F is frequently not in the vehicle it left the factory in, and the bellhousing, input shaft and transfer-case mating are what have to be established first.

They are cast iron and enormously strong, geared for load rather than for speed — which is why a Land Cruiser with one feels undergeared on a motorway and is behaving correctly.

The F is the transfer-case interface, not four-wheel drive as such, and it is the detail that decides whether two apparently identical gearboxes will bolt together.

H41F is a four-speed and H55F a five. Both are Land Cruiser and Hilux main gearboxes of the same family, and the five is the later and far commoner of the two.
