Overcharging boils a battery dry and permanently ruins it, feeds every electronic module more voltage than it was designed for, and blows bulbs across the car — and unlike a flat battery, the damage is happening the whole time the engine is running. If you notice bulbs failing unusually often, a smell like rotten eggs from the battery, or the battery case looking swollen, stop and have it recovered rather than driven.

Charging voltage is above what the strategy allows. This is the more damaging direction and the one that deserves prompt attention.
An undercharged battery leaves you stranded. An overcharged one is destroyed, and takes other things with it. Sustained overvoltage boils the electrolyte out of a lead-acid battery, which cannot be replaced and permanently reduces capacity; it can distort the plates; and in severe cases it produces enough hydrogen to be genuinely hazardous. Beyond the battery, every electronic module on the vehicle is being fed more voltage than it was designed for, and bulbs fail early across the car — which is often the first thing anyone notices.
The cause is usually the alternator's voltage regulator, which on modern units is integral and means replacing the alternator rather than a part of it. On vehicles where the module commands charging voltage rather than the alternator regulating itself, a communication or command fault can produce the same result with healthy hardware — worth establishing which arrangement the vehicle uses before ordering anything.
Marked not to be driven because the damage accumulates for as long as the engine runs, and unlike most faults on this list there is no protective strategy standing between it and the hardware.
