Maserati F154 (3.8 twin-turbo V8)

Maserati's turbocharged V8, built by Ferrari at Maranello and a member of the same F154 family as the California T and 488 — in the Quattroporte GTS, Ghibli Trofeo and Levante Trofeo. The naturally aspirated V8 it replaced is the F136.

The turbochargers sit inside the vee, and that decides its service character. Everything between the banks runs extremely hot and is very hard to reach: coolant lines, wiring and sensors there age far faster than their equivalents on an atmospheric V8, and labour dominates any estimate. Where the F136 rattled its variators on a cold start, this one's noises come from a much more crowded and hotter space.

Its long-term failure patterns are much less documented than the F136's, and the reason is volume rather than reliability — very few were built. That is worth saying plainly rather than filling with speculation borrowed from Ferrari's own applications, which run different calibration, different cooling and a different duty cycle.

What is established is ordinary for the type: direct injection deposits carbon on the intake valves at mileage, and turbocharger life tracks oil condition closely on an engine this heavily boosted.
