Mahindra XUV500
The monocoque seven-seater that moved Mahindra away from the ladder frame, sold in very large numbers for a decade and replaced by the XUV700. It is the first Mahindra where the electronics matter more than the mechanicals — a full CAN body architecture, an Aisin torque-converter automatic on later cars, and a four-wheel-drive system with no low range, which removes the transfer-case branch that dominates the Scorpio and Bolero beside it.
Its 2.2 mHawk diesel is the engine to establish first, because the name covers three states of tune across the run — a 140, a 155 and, on later BS6 cars, a ~2.0 litre version of the same design taxed as a smaller engine. A power figure alone will not tell you which car you have, and the variable-geometry turbocharger's control strategy differs between them.
The turbocharger and the EGR are the recurring pair. Vanes stick with soot on gently used cars and present as a boost-control code rather than as a noise; EGR fouling shifts flow readings enough to set codes elsewhere. On four-wheel-drive cars the coupling is electronically engaged, so a drivetrain complaint is as likely to be a sensor or a supply as a mechanical failure.
