Electric parking brake warning light
The electric parking brake reports a fault, usually a P in a circle lit amber alongside a message. There is no lever and no cable: a motor on each rear caliper, or a small unit on the cables, does the work on request. That changes what a failure means — the brake may refuse to release, refuse to apply, or apply itself only partly, and none of those is something a handbrake could do. Never leave a vehicle relying on a parking brake that has reported a fault; select park or leave a manual in gear, and chock a wheel on a slope.

What this usually means
There is no lever and no cable. A motor on each rear caliper, or a small unit acting on the cables, does the work on request — and that changes what a failure means. The brake may refuse to release, refuse to apply, or apply itself only partly, and none of those is something a handbrake could do.
Never leave a vehicle relying on a parking brake that has reported a fault. Select park, or leave a manual in gear, and chock a wheel on a slope. A brake that reports a fault may not be holding at all, and the fault message does not distinguish.
Supply is the leading cause, exactly as it is for other electrically actuated systems. The motors draw a substantial current, so a tired battery or a poor earth produces this lamp with nothing mechanically wrong — and it very often arrives alongside other unrelated warnings for the same reason.
The mechanical population is corrosion. The motors and their gearboxes sit at the rear wheels in spray and salt, and a caliper whose piston mechanism has seized will report a fault because the motor cannot reach its expected position. This is also why the service procedure matters: rear pads cannot be changed without putting the system into its service mode, and winding a piston back mechanically on the wrong design damages the actuator. Ask what was done recently before diagnosing — a lamp that dates from a brake service is usually a procedure that was not followed rather than a part that failed.
