Throttle feels slow or disconnected
The pedal no longer feels wired to the engine — a pause before anything happens, or a response that arrives all at once after you have already asked twice. There is no cable on a modern car: the pedal is a sensor and the throttle is a motor, with a module deciding what one means for the other. So this is usually not a mechanical delay but a module that has stopped trusting one of its two pedal signals and fallen back to a cautious map. Distinct from a stumble or flat spot, which is fuelling; this is the request itself arriving late.

What this usually means
A delay between the pedal and the engine is a software behaviour far more often than a mechanical one, because on a modern car there is nothing mechanical between the two. The pedal is a pair of sensors, the throttle is a motor, and a module decides how one maps to the other — so the response can be reshaped by a fault, by an adaptation, or by design, and all three feel identical from the driver's seat.
The fault version is the module falling back to a cautious map. Two pedal signals exist so it can cross-check them; if they disagree even intermittently, it stops trusting the pair and responds conservatively rather than cutting power outright. That is a deliberately gentler failure than a limp mode, which is why it can persist for months with no warning lamp and no obvious code.
The adaptation version is the one that surprises people, because it follows a repair. A throttle body cleaned or replaced without its adaptation being re-learned leaves the module working from the old body's closed position and stop limits — so the response is wrong from the day the job was done, and the car was fine before. If the complaint dates from a service rather than from nothing, ask what was cleaned.
And a large part of what feels like delay is designed in. Eco and comfort drive modes deliberately soften the pedal map; automatic transmissions apply torque management during a shift, which flattens the response for a fraction of a second; and a turbocharged engine has a genuine lag that is physics rather than a fault. A brief flat spot at low revs on a turbo engine that pulls hard once it is spinning is normal. Separate that out before diagnosing anything, or the answer will be a part that changes nothing.
