P2101: Throttle Actuator A Control Motor Circuit Range/Performance

Do not keep driving

Expect poor idle, hesitation, or the engine dropping into reduced power. Ask whether the throttle body was inspected and cleaned before a motor or throttle body is quoted — carbon around the plate is the commonest cause and cleaning is a fraction of the cost.

What this code means

The throttle motor circuit is electrically present but the throttle is not arriving where it was told to, or is taking too long about it. The module drives the motor and watches the throttle position sensors to confirm the result, so this code is that comparison failing rather than a broken wire.

Mechanical resistance is the usual cause, and it is usually carbon. A throttle plate runs in a bore it very nearly fills, and the crankcase ventilation system deposits an oily film around it which bakes into a hard ring. The motor then has to fight that ring at exactly the position it spends most of its life in — closed and just off closed — so the first symptom is a poor idle rather than a poor top end.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
