Ford 5R110W (TorqShift)
5-speed automatic · longitudinal · 2003–2016
Also known as: 5r110w, 5r110, torqshift, torq shift, ford 5-speed heavy-duty
Ford's heavy-duty five-speed — behind the Power Stroke diesel in the F-250 Super Duty and the Excursion.
It replaced the 4R100 and fixed that transmission's weakness, which was heat: the 5R110W adds a cooler circuit and a sixth ratio that only engages when the fluid is cold, used to warm the transmission faster. So a truck that appears to have an extra gear in winter is behaving correctly — the marketing name TorqShift covers both.
Its recurring failure is the torque converter and the fluid that protects it. These tow at their limit, and a converter that has been cooked contaminates the fluid with the material it sheds — which is why a burnt smell on one of these points at the converter rather than only at a fluid change.
The solenoid body accounts for most electrical faults, producing harsh engagement or a limp mode, and it is a serviceable assembly rather than a rebuild. An auxiliary cooler is a preventative measure on a towing truck, not an accessory.

4 generations. Only where a source names the model and the generation together — a gearbox is documented as a product far more often than as a fitment, so this list is deliberately shorter than the truth.
Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
