Also known as: bc4, bc5, ford bc4, escort manual

Ford's BC manual transaxles — the four-speed BC4 and five-speed BC5 — in the Escort and the small Fords around it.

⚑ These are not the iB5, which replaced them and which most Escort material describes. The iB5 has its own page here, and a reader searching Escort gearbox will find it rather than this — so establishing the year comes before any parts search.

They are cable-shifted and light, built to a cost for a small car, and the linkage is the first suspect in almost every complaint of a vague or baulky change.

Their known weakness is the differential bearing, heard as a rumble that rises with road speed rather than with engine speed — a distinction worth making before the gearbox is blamed.

Parts are scarce now, and on a car of this value that is usually what decides whether one is repaired or replaced.

1 generation. Only where a source names the model and the generation together — a gearbox is documented as a product far more often than as a fitment, so this list is deliberately shorter than the truth.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
