Jatco's longitudinal seven-speed for Nissan and Infiniti — in the Patrol Y62, QX80, Pathfinder, Navara and the Infiniti FX.

It replaced the RE5R05A and it fixed that gearbox's worst characteristic: the cooler arrangement that let engine coolant into the transmission fluid. So the failure that dominates the five-speed is not this transmission's failure, and advice about one should not be applied to the other despite the shared vehicles and overlapping years.

Its own recurring theme is the valve body and its solenoids, presenting as a harsh or delayed engagement into drive, a jerk on the 1–2 change, or a limp mode. It is often preceded by nothing at all, which is why fluid condition is worth knowing before the first symptom rather than after.

Nissan's Matic-S fluid is specific and the interval is real. These were sold with long or unstated service intervals, and a unit at 150,000 km on its original fill is the commonest version of every complaint above.

A shudder at light throttle is the lock-up clutch, not slipping — the same distinction, and the same first remedy, as everywhere else in this catalogue.

5 generations. Only where a source names the model and the generation together — a gearbox is documented as a product far more often than as a fitment, so this list is deliberately shorter than the truth.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
