Dodge Durango

The three-row SUV on the Grand Cherokee's platform of its generation — which is the useful fact, because Grand Cherokee information is far more plentiful. Towing duty is its diagnostic context: transmission temperature and cooling codes carry more consequence here than the same code on a saloon.

Generations

  • DN 1997–2003

Body-on-frame on the Dakota's chassis, and the pushrod Magnum generation: a 5.2 to 2000, a 5.9 that carried the R/T, and the 4.7 PowerTech that replaced the 5.2 from 2000. The gearbox follows the engine rather than the year — TorqueFlite behind the Magnums, RFE behind the 4.7.

  • HB 2004–2009

Still body-on-frame, but every engine is new: the pushrod Magnums are gone, the 4.7 gains a **twin-spark Corsair head for 2008** — two coils and two plugs per cylinder, which changes the misfire diagnosis completely — and the 5.7 Hemi arrives with cylinder deactivation. A Two-Mode hybrid was sold for 2009 alone.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
