The box, and the model that defined the brand. The two generations are genuinely different cars: the first is a Toyota bB imported from Japan on Yaris mechanicals with a 1.5 and a four-speed automatic — small, simple and cheap to diagnose — while the second is built on the Corolla platform with the 2.4 2AZ-FE, weighs several hundred kilos more, and inherits that engine's oil-consumption history. Model year alone tells you which set of expectations applies.
