Warms diesel before it reaches the filter, to keep the paraffin wax naturally present in the fuel from crystallising and blocking it. Usually an electric element in the filter housing or the fuel line.

Its defining property is that it fails invisibly. Above about freezing the heater has nothing to do, so a dead one produces no symptom whatsoever — the engine starts perfectly, runs perfectly and makes the same power. The only evidence is a stored code, and a code with no symptom attached is exactly the kind that gets cleared or deferred.

So the fault is discovered in summer and paid for in winter. On a hard frost, a vehicle without a working fuel heater can wax up its filter and simply not start, or start and die within a minute. Cranking does not help — the only thing that clears wax is warmth, so it usually means recovery somewhere heated and a filter change. A code appearing in July is a warning issued six months early, and fitting an element in mild weather is an ordinary job.

It draws substantial current, so relay contacts and heavy connections outrank the element as causes. Note also that on some vehicles the heater forms part of the filter assembly, which means a cheaper pattern filter can omit it entirely — the filter fits, the engine runs, and the code is the only sign that a function has gone missing.
