The straight-six diesel of BMW's modular family and the N57's replacement, from 195 kW to 294 kW depending on how many turbochargers it carries — the range runs from a single turbo to the quad-turbo M50d.
The timing chain is the thing it fixed. BMW's earlier diesels made their reputation on chains that stretched, and the B57's — still at the back of the engine, still an engine-out job in principle — is robust in a way the N47's was not. Stretch and guide failure are rare. Early cars from 2015 to 2018 had tensioner trouble, revised from 2019.
What does fail is the EGR cooler, in common with the rest of BMW's modern diesel range: it leaks, coolant goes where coolant should not, and the first sign is usually white smoke and a level that keeps dropping with no puddle under the car. Treat an unexplained coolant loss on this engine as the EGR cooler until proven otherwise — the same component's failure on the N47 and N57 was serious enough to be recalled for fire risk.
The AdBlue system and a clogged particulate filter account for most of the rest, and both are diseases of short urban journeys rather than of the engine.
