A 998 cc turbocharged three-cylinder, and the engine that made downsizing mainstream in Ford's European range — a one-litre petrol replacing 1.6 naturally aspirated units in cars up to Mondeo size. The block is cast iron rather than aluminium, chosen to reach operating temperature faster.
Its defining maintenance fact is the wet cambelt — a toothed belt running inside the engine, lubricated by engine oil, on a strict replacement interval. Two consequences follow and both cause expensive surprises. Degraded belt material sheds into the sump and can block the oil pump pickup, so a belt failure presents as oil starvation rather than as a timing fault; and the specified oil grade is not optional, because the wrong oil attacks the belt directly. An engine with unknown service history is worth treating as a belt job pending evidence.
Early examples also had a coolant-system weakness — a degas hose and thermostat housing failure that could allow overheating quickly enough to crack the head. On a small-capacity engine working hard, a coolant complaint deserves urgency it would not get on a larger unit.
