Bent or worn shift fork
The fork itself, damaged: pads worn thin where they ride the synchroniser sleeve, or the fork sprung out of shape by a shift forced through under load. A worn fork engages late and shallow — the sleeve travels short of full mesh, gears whine or drop out under torque, and the position sensor faithfully reports a fork that no longer reaches where it used to.
Abuse history is the usual author. Automated boxes protect their forks well; the damage often predates the codes by years — a recovered-from fault, a towing overload, a previous life of harsh shifts. Once bent, it wears its synchroniser in sympathy, so the two are usually inspected — and budgeted — together.
Typically specialist work. Needs equipment or training most home workshops do not have.
