Cause

Carbon-seized manifold tuning valve

The valve altering the intake manifold's geometry, seized with carbon so it cannot change position. The engine still runs well across half its rev range — whichever half matches the position it is stuck in — so the complaint is a flat spot rather than a fault, and it is usually blamed on fuelling.

Long intake paths favour low-speed torque and short ones high-speed breathing. Stuck long, the engine pulls strongly from idle and runs out of breath at the top; stuck short, it feels hollow low down and comes alive late. That asymmetry is the diagnostic signature and no fuelling fault produces it.

Carbon accumulates on the shaft and in its bore from crankcase and recirculation deposits, and it builds for the life of the engine. Check the effort needed to move the valve by hand with the actuator disconnected — a seized shaft with a healthy actuator and a free shaft with a failed actuator give the same code and want different repairs.

Typically a moderate job.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
