Clutch adaptation at its limit

An automated or dual-clutch transmission that has run out of adjustment to compensate for clutch wear. The module learns the clutch's touch point and moves it as the friction material wears — and when the required correction reaches the end of its range, it reports that it can compensate no further.

It is a wear indicator rather than a fault, and a genuinely useful one: it says the clutch is near the end of its life before the driver notices slipping. The complaint is usually shuddering on take-off, hesitation between gears, or a clutch that engages abruptly, all of which appear as the adaptation runs out.

Two things are worth ruling out first. A clutch replaced without the adaptation being reset starts from the old worn values and reaches the limit immediately with a new clutch fitted. And low hydraulic pressure or a failing actuator produces the same reading — the module measures where the clutch engaged, not why, so an actuator that cannot complete its travel looks exactly like a worn clutch. Check actuator pressure and travel before condemning the clutch, since one is a service item and the other is a gearbox out.

Typically an easy fix. Often worth checking before paying anyone to look.
