P0811: Excessive Clutch A Slippage
Do not keep driving
Stop driving it. Clutch slip generates heat fast and each additional journey does measurable damage, which is why this is one of the few transmission codes where continuing is genuinely costly rather than merely unwise. If the car has refused to move after a period of slipping, that is the transmission protecting itself — have it recovered.
What this code means
The clutch is transmitting less torque than it should — engine speed and transmission input speed are diverging when they ought to be locked together. This is the automated-manual and dual-clutch counterpart to P0730, and the diagnostic order set out there applies here too: confirm the measurement before accepting the expensive explanation.
What is specific to a clutch is heat. A slipping clutch converts the entire difference in speed into heat at the friction surface, and it does so quickly — a dual-clutch gearbox can reach a damaging temperature within a few minutes of persistent slip. Modules therefore protect themselves aggressively, and a vehicle that refuses to move after a period of slipping is usually doing so deliberately rather than having broken.
A worn clutch is the leading cause but not the only one. On a wet-clutch design, oil contamination changes the friction characteristics and produces slip on a clutch with plenty of material left. An actuator not achieving full travel produces it on a clutch that is perfectly good. Both are worth eliminating, because both are cheaper than the assumption.
