Faulty four wheel drive switch
The switch by which the driver selects a drive mode — high range, low range, locked — reporting incorrectly or not at all. It is the input to the system rather than any part of the driveline, and a fault here disables a mechanically perfect transfer case.
A module that cannot read the request will not act on it, and is right not to. Engaging low range or a differential lock at the wrong moment is mechanically damaging, so a switch reporting ambiguously — two positions at once, or none — leaves the system where it is. The complaint is a selector that does nothing, with no noise and no warning beyond a code.
These switches live in a hard place. Console-mounted ones meet spilled drinks and dust; ones on the transfer case itself meet road spray, salt and heat. Corroded contacts and a corroded connector account for most of them, and both are visible. Watch the reported position while operating the switch through every mode — a position that flickers, sticks, or reports two states is the fault, and it will not show on a static resistance check at one setting.
Typically an easy fix. Often worth checking before paying anyone to look.
