P0836: Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Switch Circuit
What to do
Establish which way it is stuck. If it will not engage four-wheel drive, drive with more care in poor conditions and book it in. If it is stuck in four-wheel drive, avoid dry tarmac — you may notice tight-turn binding, juddering at low speed on full lock, or a wound-up feeling when parking. That is the driveline under strain, and continuing will eventually break something expensive.
What this code means
The module is not receiving a usable signal from the switch reporting the four-wheel-drive selection. Several systems read it — the transmission for shift scheduling, the engine module for torque limits, and stability control, whose model of the vehicle depends entirely on which wheels are driven.
The failure direction matters here, and in a way that is the opposite of most people's instinct. A vehicle stuck in two-wheel drive is inconvenient: less traction in poor conditions, nothing damaged. A part-time system stuck in four-wheel drive on dry tarmac is actively harmful. Such systems lock the front and rear axles together with no centre differential, and because the axles travel slightly different distances through a corner, the driveline winds up against itself. On a loose surface the tyres slip and release that tension harmlessly; on grippy tarmac they cannot, and the stored energy goes into the transfer case, propshafts and differentials until something gives.
So the question to answer first is not whether four-wheel drive works, but whether it can be switched off.
