Faulty motor current sensor

The sensors watching each motor phase's current from inside the inverter assembly — measurement and self-protection in one part, since phase current is both how the inverter knows its delivered torque and how it detects an overcurrent before its own silicon melts.

Their characteristic failure is drift rather than death. At power-on every phase should read exactly zero; a sensor whose zero has drifted with age and heat fails that check while working normally otherwise, which is why these faults are so often caught silently at start-up rather than felt on the road. A drifted sensor can also impersonate a real phase fault — reporting imbalance in a healthy machine — which is how healthy motors and inverters end up condemned.

Because the sensors live inside the inverter, replacement is inverter work in practice; their external signal wiring is the half a workshop can reach, and it is checked first.
