Faulty turbocharger speed sensor
The sensor reading how fast the turbocharger shaft is turning, fitted only to engines running close enough to their limits that boost pressure is no longer a good enough proxy for what the turbo is doing.
Before accepting it as the fault, the question that matters is whether the reading is wrong or merely unwelcome. The module targets a boost pressure, so if air is escaping between the compressor and the engine it drives the turbo harder and harder chasing a target it can no longer reach — and the sensor then correctly reports a speed beyond what the turbocharger was built for. Replacing the sensor there clears the warning and leaves the turbo still overspeeding, which is the worst available outcome. A pressure test of the charge air pipework costs little and separates the two outright.
When the sensor genuinely is at fault, heat is usually why. It threads into a housing carrying exhaust gas, so its wiring is among the hottest on the vehicle and hardened, cracked insulation touching a grounded housing is an ordinary finding — a new sensor on an unrepaired loom fails the same way.
An erratic reading deserves one specific check before the sensor is blamed: play in the turbo shaft. These sensors count the compressor blades going past, so a shaft moving on worn bearings produces a genuinely jumping signal. That makes an unstable reading an unusually direct early warning of a turbocharger beginning to fail, and it takes two minutes to distinguish from a wiring fault.
