Faulty vacuum reservoir pressure sensor

The sensor watching stored vacuum in the reservoir that serves vacuum-operated devices — most importantly the brake servo on engines that cannot generate vacuum continuously. That is why a fault here is treated more seriously than its position in the intake would suggest: the module is monitoring a safety reserve, and a reading it cannot trust means it cannot promise the reserve is there.

Turbocharged petrol and most diesel engines are the context. They produce little or no manifold vacuum when it is most needed, so an auxiliary pump fills a reservoir and this sensor reports the level. A sensor fault and a genuinely empty reservoir look the same to the driver — a hard brake pedal after repeated applications — and only the stored data separates them.

Diagnose the circuit before the sensor. A reading pinned at either extreme is usually a shorted or open harness rather than a failed element, and a reading that is merely wrong is the harder case. Compare it against a gauge teed into the reservoir, and check the reservoir's own check valve while the system is open — a leaking valve makes a perfectly good sensor report a reserve that keeps draining away.

Typically an easy fix. Often worth checking before paying anyone to look.
