What to do

Pay attention to how the brake pedal feels. Stored vacuum is what makes the brake servo multiply your pedal effort, and if the store is being lost the pedal becomes progressively harder — the brakes still work, but they take far more effort and stopping distances get longer. A pedal that has become noticeably harder is a reason to stop driving and have the car recovered, not something to mention at the next service. The usual causes are a failed check valve or a perished hose rather than the sensor itself, and both are inexpensive. Ask for the vacuum to be measured at the reservoir rather than only reading the sensor.

What this code means

A fault in the circuit of the sensor monitoring stored vacuum. This is one of very few codes in the P2 range whose consequence reaches the brakes, and that is the reason to read it carefully rather than filing it with the other sensor circuit faults.

Why a vehicle stores vacuum at all. A petrol engine generates vacuum in its intake manifold by throttling, and for decades that was simply available whenever it was wanted. Two developments removed that assumption. A turbocharged engine spends much of its working life above atmospheric pressure, where there is no vacuum to be had at all. And direct injection and modern efficiency strategies mean the throttle is often barely closed, so even a naturally aspirated engine may produce far less than it used to.

So vacuum became something to be generated by a pump and stored in a reservoir against the moments it is needed. This sensor watches that store.

What draws on it, in rough order of how much it matters:

  • The brake servo. This is the one that counts. The servo multiplies pedal effort using stored vacuum, and it holds enough for a small number of applications with the engine off. Losing the store means a hard pedal and materially longer stopping distances — the brakes still work, but they need a great deal more effort than the driver is used to.
  • Vacuum-operated actuators — EGR valves, wastegates, secondary air switching, and on some vehicles the engine mounts and heater blend doors.

The fault worth knowing about is not the sensor. A reservoir has no moving parts. What fails is the check valve that holds the vacuum in, or a perished hose that lets it out — both inexpensive, both easily overlooked, and both producing a brake pedal that gets harder as the store drains.

If the brake pedal has become noticeably harder, treat that as the symptom and act on it rather than waiting, whatever the code list says.
