Incorrect engine oil viscosity

Oil of the wrong grade for the engine, which matters far more on a modern engine than it used to because oil is now a hydraulic working fluid as well as a lubricant. Variable valve timing actuators, switching lifters and timing chain tensioners are all moved by oil pressure through small passages sized for one viscosity.

Too thick is the commoner error and the one with the clearest symptoms. A heavier oil than specified will not flow through a fine control passage quickly enough, so a cam phaser responds slowly or not at all and the module stores a timing performance code — most obviously when cold, easing as the engine warms and the oil thins. A timing fault that is worst on a cold start and clears after a few minutes points at oil before it points at a phaser.

Too thin loses pressure at temperature and load, which produces the opposite pattern and puts bearings at risk. The specification is the engine's, not a general recommendation — check what the manufacturer requires, including the approval standard and not merely the viscosity numbers, since two oils of the same grade can differ in the additive package these mechanisms depend on. Ask what was last put in before diagnosing the actuator, particularly after a service elsewhere.
