P2646: A Rocker Arm Actuator System Performance or Stuck Off Bank 1
What to do
Often there is nothing to feel. On an engine with variable valve lift it may seem flat at high revs while being completely normal in everyday driving; on one with cylinder deactivation you may notice only that it is using more fuel.
The important thing is the order in which this gets investigated, because the parts involved differ enormously in price. Ask for these in sequence:
- The oil pressure switch that confirms the actuator worked. This is the commonest cause by a distance, and the cheapest part — a failed switch reports a failure on a system that operated perfectly well.
- The mesh screen in the solenoid, which clogs with oil sludge and can often simply be cleaned.
- The oil level, grade and service history, since these actuators run on engine oil pressure and nothing else.
Only after those should anything inside the cylinder head be discussed, because that is a large job and the items above account for most of these codes. A quote that goes straight to the mechanical end without covering them is worth questioning.
What this code means
The A rocker arm actuator on bank 1 was commanded and did not engage — or the module could not confirm that it did. The mechanism is at P2645.
That second possibility is not a technicality. It is the most likely explanation, and it is the reason this code costs people money.
The module does not watch the pin. It commands the solenoid and then reads an oil pressure switch that confirms pressure arrived at the actuator gallery. A failed switch reports that nothing happened on a system that worked perfectly — and the switch is a small, cheap, accessible part while everything else in this family is not.
The order to work through is almost entirely a cost order, and getting it right is worth more here than anywhere else in the block:
- The oil pressure switch that verifies the actuator. Commonest cause, cheapest part. Check this first.
- The solenoid's mesh screen. A fine filter in the solenoid body that clogs with sludge, starving the gallery of flow. Cleaning it resolves a real share of these outright, and it is a fraction of the cost of the solenoid, let alone what is behind it.
- The oil itself — level, grade and condition, for the reasons at P2645.
- The solenoid.
- The mechanical actuator in the head. Last, because reaching it is a cylinder head job and because the four items above account for most of these codes.
What the driver feels depends on which system the engine has, and it is worth asking. On a variable lift engine, stuck off means high lift is never selected: the car is perfectly normal in ordinary driving and simply runs out of enthusiasm at high revs, which a great many drivers never notice at all. On a cylinder deactivation engine, stuck off means the cylinders never shut down — so nothing is wrong with how it drives and the only cost is fuel, which makes it easy to ignore and easy to misattribute to driving style or a cold winter.
