Parking pawl loaded on a slope
The parking pawl under load because the vehicle was parked on a gradient without the handbrake. The vehicle's whole weight rests on the pawl, wedging it against the output gear so the actuator cannot withdraw it.
The complaint is a selector that will not leave park, which reads as a transmission failure and is not. The remedy is to relieve the load: chock the wheels, apply the parking brake, and rock the vehicle slightly — the pawl then releases normally. The habit that prevents it is applying the handbrake before selecting park, which is worth telling an owner who meets this repeatedly. A module reporting the pawl did not move is reporting the truth, so the sensor is not at fault and should not be replaced.
Typically an easy fix. Often worth checking before paying anyone to look.
