Weak low pressure lift pump
The in-tank pump feeding the high-pressure pump on a diesel. Starving the high-pressure pump is how it destroys itself, since fuel is its only lubricant — so a weak lift pump is a cheap part whose neglect writes off an expensive one, and the debris then travels to the injectors.
