P02D5: Cylinder 5 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Max Limit

What to do

Ask for the trim values on every cylinder, not just this one. On a six or eight cylinder engine the injectors are all the same age and doing the same work — so if several are close to their limits, replacing them together while the engine is apart is far cheaper than returning for each in turn.

Ask what the labour is to reach the injectors on this engine before deciding. On larger engines that is most of the cost, and it changes the arithmetic completely.

Ask whether cleaning and flow testing is an option, which can restore injectors restricted by deposits rather than worn out.

Mention the fuel filter's age and any history of poor fuel.

What this code means

The correction the module applies to cylinder 5's injector has reached the top of its adjustment range.

Cylinder 5 under-delivers and the module has added all the correction it is allowed to.

On a six or eight cylinder engine, the practical question this code raises is not really which injector — it is how many. These engines carry six or eight injectors of the same age, doing the same work, exposed to the same fuel. When one reaches the end of its adjustment range, the others are usually well along the same path.

So the repair decision is genuinely different from a four-cylinder engine. Access is worse, labour is higher, and the marginal cost of doing the whole set while everything is apart is much smaller than the cost of doing it twice. That is a conversation worth having explicitly rather than discovering six months later.

The causes are the under-delivery set: deposits narrowing the nozzle, a slow-opening actuator, a wrong or missing calibration code, or a restricted supply to that injector.

Ask for every cylinder's trim value, not just the ones that set codes. A trim sitting at three-quarters of its range is a warning that has not become a code yet, and it is exactly the information that should inform whether to do one injector or all of them.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
