P0C76: Hybrid/EV Battery System Discharge Time Too Long
What to do
Treat the vehicle as electrically live even when switched off, and tell anybody who works on it that this code is stored. The car is reporting that it could not confirm its high-voltage system discharged safely after shutdown, so the usual wait-a-few-minutes rule does not apply here. Do not attempt any work near orange cabling, the pack or the inverter yourself, and mention this code explicitly when booking it in — it changes how the vehicle must be handled, not just what needs fixing.
What this code means
After shutdown, the high-voltage system took longer than it should have to discharge to a safe voltage.
This is the most safety-relevant code in the block and it deserves to be read plainly. When an electrified car is switched off, the contactors open and the energy stored in the inverter's capacitors is deliberately bled away through a discharge circuit, so that within a short and specified time the system is below a voltage that can hurt somebody. That time is measured, and this code says it was exceeded.
So the vehicle is reporting that it may still be at a dangerous voltage after being switched off — which is exactly the assumption every safe working practice depends on being false.
The causes are the discharge path failing, or something keeping the capacitors supplied: a broken bleed resistor, a control fault in the discharge circuit, or a contactor that has not opened, which means the pack is still connected.
The practical consequence matters more than the diagnosis. A vehicle with this code stored should be treated as live regardless of its ignition state, and the usual "switch off and wait five minutes" rule — which is what most people, including many workshops, rely on — is precisely the rule this code says cannot be trusted on this car.
