P2781: Downshift Switch Circuit High
What to do
The car drives normally in D — what has failed is the manual shift request, not the gearbox. Leave the selector in drive and let it shift for itself until the circuit is repaired. Plan for long descents, because the usual answer — holding a low gear for engine braking — may not be available: slow down earlier and brake in shorter, firmer applications rather than dragging the brakes.
What this code means
The downshift switch circuit is reading high.
A constant high usually means a short to voltage or a broken wire leaving the line pulled up — either way the signal never changes, and a switch that cannot change state is no switch at all.
This is the request side of a manual shift, not the gearbox itself. On a car with a manual gate or steering-wheel paddles, pulling for a gear closes a switch, and the transmission control module reads that request and decides whether to honour it. This circuit is that switch's wiring.
The car still drives, because D never asks. Fully automatic shifting does not use the shift request circuits at all — the module schedules gears from speed and load on its own. What stops working is the manual override: the gearbox ignores the paddle or the gate, or drops back to automatic shortly after a request.
On a paddle car, the wiring runs through the steering wheel's clock spring — the wound ribbon cable that lets the wheel turn while staying connected. A clock spring worn out by years of steering, or disturbed by steering-wheel or airbag work, takes the paddles with it. If this code arrived soon after any work behind the wheel, start there — and take it seriously beyond the convenience, because the same ribbon usually carries the horn and airbag circuits.
The selector gate has its own failure mode: the switch contacts wear and corrode. A gate that only registers some pulls, or registers one pull twice, is a tired switch rather than a transmission fault — and a far cheaper repair than anything inside the gearbox.
Do not let this code send anyone into the transmission. Nothing here touches the hydraulics: the fluid, clutches and solenoids are all innocent until the request signal has been proven at the module connector.
