P2783: Torque Converter Temperature Too High

Stop somewhere safe and let it cool before driving on. Heat at this level is degrading the fluid every clutch in the gearbox depends on. If you are towing, treat it as an overload warning: slow down, use a lower gear, and give the transmission time to shed heat. If it recurs unloaded, have the cooler circuit and the lock-up clutch checked rather than waiting for the burning smell.
What this code means
The torque converter is running too hot.
A torque converter is a fluid coupling, and slip is both how it works and how it makes heat. Two bladed wheels face each other in fluid: the engine spins one, and the fluid drags the other round. The difference between their speeds is slip, and every unit of slip is engine work converted directly into heat in the transmission fluid.
To stop that waste at speed, the converter carries a lock-up clutch that couples the two halves solidly once the car is cruising. When lock-up cannot engage — a worn clutch, a failed control solenoid — the converter goes on slipping at motorway speeds where it should be locked, and makes heat continuously instead of only when pulling away.
Heat has a second route in: cooling that cannot keep up. Converter heat leaves through the transmission fluid cooler, so a blocked cooler or a stuck bypass valve traps it in the box. And a third: load. Towing, mountain gradients and sustained hard running push more slip through the converter than commuting ever will, and the code arriving under exactly those conditions is the system reporting an overload rather than a defect.
The real casualty is the fluid. Overheated transmission fluid oxidises and loses both its friction properties and its pressure-carrying ability — and every clutch in the gearbox depends on both. One thorough overheat can shorten the life of a transmission that was otherwise healthy, which is why this code deserves a response measured in minutes rather than weeks.
If it appears while towing, the code is doing its job. The transmission cannot shed heat as fast as the load is making it. Slow down, select a lower gear so the converter can lock or slip less, and let it cool before asking for more.
