What this usually means
Worth identifying quickly, since several of the possibilities are urgent — and the smell itself is the best available evidence, because each material burns distinctively.
- Hot oil: acrid and slightly sweet, usually with visible smoke from the engine bay. Oil on a hot manifold is a fire risk regardless of how small the leak is.
- Electrical insulation: sharp, plastic, unmistakable once met. Treat as urgent — an overheating circuit is on its way to a fire and often smells before it fails.
- Transmission fluid: sharper and more chemical than engine oil, and on an automatic it usually means the fluid has been overheated rather than spilt.
- Coolant: sweet, with white steam rather than smoke.
- Clutch: a hot, dusty, distinctive smell after hill starts or heavy traffic, and normal in small amounts on a manual being worked hard.
- Brakes: hot metal and friction material after a long descent, or from one wheel if a caliper is binding.
Where it comes from narrows it further, and one free test does most of the work: feel each wheel after a drive. A wheel noticeably hotter than the others is a binding brake or a failing bearing, and that distinguishes a wheel-end smell from an engine-bay one immediately.
A burning smell with smoke, or any electrical smell, is a stop-and-investigate rather than a drive-home. Disconnect the battery if an electrical smell is strong and the source is not obvious.
